India Assists Sri Lanka in Modernizing Railway Infrastructure with USD 106.16 Million Investment

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, recently participated in the inauguration ceremony of two railway projects built with Indian assistance in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. The event was attended by the President of Sri Lanka, H.E. Anura Kumara Disanayaka.

During the ceremony, Mr. Modi and the President launched the 128 km Maho-Omanthai railway line, which has been refurbished with an Indian assistance of USD 91.27 million. This upgrade is part of a larger initiative to modernize the Sri Lankan rail network.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister also marked the launch of construction on an advanced signaling system, spanning from Maho to Anuradhapura, built with Indian grant assistance of USD 14.89 million. These projects represent a significant milestone in strengthening north-south rail connectivity in Sri Lanka and are expected to facilitate faster and more efficient movement of both passenger and freight traffic across the country.

The India-Sri Lanka development partnership has been instrumental in implementing these landmark railway modernization projects, which are a testament to the strong ties between the two nations. The success of this initiative underscores the commitment of both countries to enhancing regional connectivity and cooperation.
