The 1st India-Equatorial Guinea Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) took place on February 10, 2025, in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, marking a significant milestone in the growing diplomatic relations between the two nations. The consultations were co-chaired by Shri Sevala Naik Mude, Additional Secretary (Central and West Africa), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and Mr. Matias Nguema Mba Medja, Secretary General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Diaspora of Equatorial Guinea.
Comprehensive Review of Bilateral Ties
During the high-level discussions, both delegations conducted an in-depth review of the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, including:
- Trade and Investment: Strengthening economic partnerships in key sectors such as energy, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.
- Health & Pharmaceuticals: Expanding cooperation in healthcare, including medical research and pharmaceutical exports.
- Education & Capacity Building: Increasing academic exchange programs, scholarships, and vocational training.
- Defence & Maritime Security: Enhancing collaboration in strategic security domains to ensure regional stability.
- Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Leveraging India’s expertise in digital governance and fintech.
- People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges: Strengthening historical and cultural bonds through events and initiatives.
The discussions also covered multilateral cooperation, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to working together at international forums. Equatorial Guinea praised India’s role in advocating for Africa’s inclusion in the G20, recognizing that the African Union’s permanent membership would strengthen the Global South’s voice in global governance.

During his visit, Shri Sevala Naik Mude met with key Equatorial Guinean officials, including:

India’s Humanitarian Support: Donation of Essential Medicines
In a gesture of solidarity and support, India donated 10,000 kg of anti-retroviral drugs and diagnostic kits for the management of HIV/AIDS in Equatorial Guinea. The medical supplies were officially handed over to Health Minister H.E. Mr. Mitoha Ondo’o Ayekaba during a special ceremony, reinforcing India’s commitment to healthcare cooperation in Africa.
Strengthening Trade and Economic Ties
India and Equatorial Guinea have witnessed a strong trade relationship, with bilateral trade reaching $347.10 million in 2023-24. Historically, trade peaked at $983.80 million in 2019-20, largely driven by India’s import of oil and gas from Equatorial Guinea. Both countries acknowledged the potential to expand trade and investment beyond hydrocarbons, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and mining.
Deepening Multilateral Cooperation
Equatorial Guinea has been an active participant in the Voice of Global South Summits hosted by India and remains a member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), aligning with India’s vision for sustainable and renewable energy collaboration.
Next Round of Foreign Office Consultations
Both nations agreed to hold the next round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi at a mutually convenient date, further advancing the robust diplomatic and economic partnership.
