In a significant diplomatic development, Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu will represent the Government of Canada in Quito, Ecuador, during the inauguration of President Daniel Noboa on May 23, 2025. This visit marks an important milestone in Canada-Ecuador relations, which have been strengthened by a growing trade and investment partnership.
The bilateral free trade agreement between Canada and Ecuador is on track for timely ratification, with both countries having successfully concluded negotiations in January 2025. The agreement will create new opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers to access the Ecuadorian market, while also deepening trade and investment ties between the two nations.
During his visit, Minister Sidhu will engage with regional leaders to discuss Canada's role as a stable and reliable business partner for Latin America. He will also meet with representatives from Canadian mining companies to discuss critical minerals and infrastructure opportunities in Ecuador, as well as speak with Ecuadorian business leaders about deepening trade and investment through the Canada-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement.
The Minister has expressed his enthusiasm for enhancing Canada's partnership with Ecuador, stating: "I am honored to represent Canada at this significant event. Our relationship with Ecuador is strong, built on growing trade and investment. I am eager to enhance our partnership further, creating increased opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers."
Canada and Ecuador have complementary trade relations, with Canada importing mostly tropical fruits, cut flowers, cacao, and seafood from Ecuador, and Ecuador importing wheat, lentils, and peas from Canada. The entry into force of the Canada-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement will also give Canada trade agreements with all the countries on the South American Pacific Coast.
This visit highlights Canada's commitment to strengthening its relationships in Latin America, a region that is increasingly important for Canadian businesses and workers. Minister Sidhu's engagement with regional leaders and business leaders will help to foster greater cooperation and understanding between our two nations.
