Canada to Strengthen Democracy and Human Rights at OAS General Assembly

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – JUNE 24, 2025

In a significant diplomatic move, Canada will participate in the 55th Regular Session of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Saint John's, Antigua and Barbuda, from June 25 to 27, 2025. During this pivotal gathering, Honourable Mona Fortier, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will deliver Canada's national statement, emphasizing the country's commitment to regional collaboration on critical issues.

Canada's engagement at the OAS is rooted in its long-standing dedication to advancing democracy, human rights, and security in the Americas. As a key multilateral institution, the organization plays a vital role in defending democratic institutions, upholding human rights, and promoting economic development.

During her visit, Honourable Fortier will focus on safeguarding democratic institutions, particularly in Haiti, where Canada has pledged to support international efforts addressing humanitarian and security challenges. She will also underscore the importance of promoting gender equality, inclusion, and diversity, as well as advancing health initiatives, including mental health.

However, Honourable Fortier's attendance at the OAS General Assembly is also marked by concern over deteriorating human rights situations and democratic backsliding in Venezuela and Nicaragua. Canada will use this platform to emphasize its commitment to these fundamental values, highlighting the need for urgent action to address these crises.

The OAS, founded in 1948, has four pillars: democracy, human rights, security, and development. As a full member of the organization since 1990, Canada is one of its largest financial contributors. The country's engagement at the OAS reflects its dedication to advancing regional cooperation on key priorities that align with its own foreign policy objectives.

Through Honourable Fortier's participation in the OAS General Assembly, Canada reaffirms its commitment to strengthening democracy and human rights in the Americas. As a respected member of the international community, Canada will continue to play an active role in shaping the future of regional cooperation and promoting peace, security, and prosperity in the region.
