Cambodia and Malaysia Strengthen Bilateral Ties Amid ASEAN Chairmanship

In a courtesy call made on 24 December 2024, His Excellency Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, engaged in discussions with H.E. Mr. Shaharuddin Onn, Ambassador of Malaysia to Cambodia.

The visit marked an opportunity for the two leaders to exchange views on strengthening Cambodia-Malaysia bilateral ties, building on the fruitful outcomes of the official visit to Malaysia by Samdech Thipadei Prime Minister Hun Manet in February this year. The growing trade, investment, tourism, and cooperation between the two countries were highlighted as key areas of focus.

His Excellency Prak Sokhonn expressed his satisfaction with the increased support for Cambodian rice in Malaysia, while Ambassador Shaharuddin Onn shared his enthusiasm for the expanding bilateral relations. Discussions also centered on the possibility of convening the Third Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation, a move aimed at further enhancing cooperation in emerging sectors such as the Halal industry.

The leaders emphasized the importance of defense and security cooperation, particularly in combating transnational crimes, including online scams. Cambodia pledged its full support and cooperation with Malaysia’s assumption of ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.

During the call, His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister congratulated Malaysia on its new role as ASEAN Chair and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening regional ties.

The strong diplomatic engagement between Cambodia and Malaysia underscores the importance of these bilateral relations in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia.
