IORA Council Meeting Highlights Key Developments in Indian Ocean Cooperation

Colombo, Sri Lanka – May 21, 2025 – The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Council of Ministers (COM) concluded its 24th meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, solidifying the organization’s commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development. The meeting, held virtually, brought together representatives from 23 member states and 12 dialogue partners, marking a significant step in addressing shared challenges and promoting economic and security interests within the Indian Ocean region.Key outcomes of the meeting included the adoption of the IORA Guidelines on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, a critical initiative aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems and livelihoods. Furthermore, the Council formally welcomed the European Union as its 12th Dialogue Partner, bolstering IORA’s engagement with key global actors. The meeting also witnessed the successful launch of the IORA Vision 2030 and Beyond, a strategic roadmap for the organization’s future activities.

The Council also acknowledged the successful completion of the IORA Business Conclave 2024, a landmark event that brought together over 200 regional business leaders to foster collaboration and explore emerging sectors, including ICT, Agriculture, Logistics, Tourism and Renewable Energy.
