A high-level visit by Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn to Oddar Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces, marked a significant step towards addressing the ongoing Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. The field visit, which took place on August 1-2, 2025, was attended by heads and representatives of 26 Diplomatic Missions and specialized agencies of the United Nations.
During his visit, Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn witnessed the ground situation in two areas that were damaged during the recent clashes. He saw firsthand the damage to civilian structures, including homes, schools, health centers, and religious sites. The visit also provided an opportunity for him to interact with 440 displaced families at the Phnom Thmor Kambor pagoda and 690 families at Prasat Banteay Srei pagoda.
According to the National Committee for Disaster Management of Cambodia, a total of 40,872 households or 136,013 persons were displaced in five affected border provinces. Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn assured the displaced communities that the Royal Government of Cambodia would make every possible effort to alleviate their hardship and ensure their safe return home as soon as possible.
The diplomatic corps and United Nations Agencies who joined the site visit expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families for the loss of their loved ones and conveyed sincere sympathies to all those affected by the armed clashes. They emphasized the importance of full respect and effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement, a critical step towards achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution.
The meeting also received strong support from international partners, with many expressing hope that complete peace would be restored soon and welcoming the upcoming meeting of the General Border Committee (from August 4 to 7, 2025). The continued dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand was also voiced as a crucial step towards achieving a durable peace that would enable displaced communities to return home and resume their lives in safety and dignity.
The visit marked an important moment in Cambodia's diplomatic efforts to address the border conflict, with Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn reaffirming the Royal Government's commitment to finding a peaceful resolution.
