In a statement released on 16 Dec 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation underscored Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to regional cooperation and its role as a key player in maintaining stability and promoting peace in Southeast Asia.
Cambodia reiterated its support for ASEAN’s central role in promoting economic growth, social progress, and cultural development, as well as its commitment to enhancing regional security and cooperation. The Ministry emphasized that Cambodia will continue to engage actively with its neighbors and partners to address common challenges and promote mutual understanding.
The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation also wished to highlight the importance of ASEAN’s Economic Community (AEC), which aims to create a single market and production base by 2025. Cambodia pledged its support for AEC, recognizing the significant benefits it will bring to the region, including increased economic integration, trade facilitation, and investment promotion.
Bilateral Relations with Key Partners
The Ministry also reaffirmed Cambodia’s strong commitment to its strategic partnership with Japan, which has been a cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy. The two countries have consistently supported each other on regional issues, including the implementation of the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (AJCEP).
Additionally, the Ministry highlighted its ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with China, with which Cambodia shares a long history of cultural and economic exchanges. The two countries have been cooperating closely on regional issues, including maritime security and disaster management.
Regional Diplomacy
Cambodia’s engagement in regional diplomacy has also been marked by its active participation in ASEAN’s East Asia Summit (EAS) and the East Asia Summit Plus Three (EAS+3). The Ministry emphasized that these forums provide an important platform for Cambodia to engage with regional and international stakeholders on key issues, including peace and security, trade and investment, and climate change.
The Kingdom of Cambodia has consistently demonstrated its commitment to regional cooperation and diplomacy, as reflected in its active engagement with ASEAN’s regional initiatives. As the region continues to navigate complex geopolitical challenges, Cambodia remains a steadfast advocate for regional stability and peace.
