Cambodia and Thailand Reinforce Commitment to Peaceful Border Resolution

In a significant development, His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, met with His Excellency Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, in Tokyo on 30 May 2025, during the Nikkei Forum 30" Future of Asia. The meeting marked a positive step towards resolving the recent border clash between the two countries.

The two foreign ministers noted that following an earlier meeting between their respective army chiefs on 29 May 2025, the situation had returned to normal, with no further incidents reported in Techo Morokot village, Morokot commune, Chormkhsan district, Preah Vihear province. The Thai army's opening fire on a Cambodian army base in the area was deemed a provocation that triggered the clash.

The meeting highlighted Cambodia and Thailand's commitment to maintaining traditional friendship, good neighborliness, mutual understanding, and trust in resolving disputes peacefully. The two countries reaffirmed their respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, with a focus on respecting the spirit of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding between Cambodia and Thailand on the Survey and Demarcation of Land Boundary (MoU 2000).

To address ongoing border issues, particularly in the area where the recent incident occurred, the two foreign ministers agreed to utilize all existing mechanisms, including the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) mechanism. The JBC is a key platform for addressing border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand.

Cambodia's stance on transforming its borders with neighboring countries into Zones of peace, friendship, cooperation, and mutual benefit was reiterated by Minister Sokhonn. This approach aligns with Cambodia's vision for regional stability and cooperation, as reflected in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The successful meeting between Cambodia and Thailand serves as a testament to the importance of diplomatic engagement in resolving regional conflicts peacefully. As ASEAN continues to promote regional stability and economic growth, countries like Cambodia and Thailand will play crucial roles in shaping the region's future.

In conclusion, the recent meeting between Cambodia and Thailand demonstrates the two countries' commitment to maintaining peace and cooperation in their bilateral relations, while also promoting regional stability through ASEAN cooperation.
