Thailand Stands Firm on Border Dispute with Cambodia

In a statement released on 2 Jul 2025, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa underscored Thailand’s position on the current situation along the Thai-Cambodian border, emphasizing the country’s commitment to resolving boundary issues through bilateral mechanisms.

Following a clash between Thai and Cambodian soldiers at Chong Bok, Ubon Ratchathani Province on 28 May 2025, Thailand sent a letter of protest to Cambodia, citing self-defense and national sovereignty. The situation has since de-escalated, with no further clashes reported, and both sides have re-deployed their troops to reduce the risk of confrontation.

A significant step forward was taken with the convening of the 6th Meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) on 14–15 June 2025. This marked a notable achievement in advancing a framework for technical staff from both sides to jointly conduct surveys and land demarcation.

Thailand remains resolute in negotiating with Cambodia, committing to resolving boundary issues through peaceful dialogue and the MOU on the Survey and Demarcation of the Land Boundary of 2000 (MoU2000). The MoU serves as a legally binding treaty that both parties must adhere to, requesting settlement of differences peacefully.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned recent comments made by senior government officials of Cambodia on social media platforms, deeming them a serious violation of the ASEAN Charter, the Charter of the United Nations, and international law. The ministry urges Cambodia to refrain from such actions and resolve issues bilaterally through peaceful means.

Thailand’s primary objective is to safeguard its territorial integrity while avoiding losses, promoting peace and security along the border areas, and ensuring local communities can live in peace and normalcy.
