Singapore Leads Regional Efforts to Combat Climate Change

SINGAPORE, 20 SEPTEMBER 2023 – In a significant move to address the pressing issue of climate change, Singapore has reiterated its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development in the region.

The city-state’s efforts were underscored during a high-level meeting at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The meeting brought together world leaders, international organizations, and civil society representatives to discuss strategies for mitigating climate change and adapting to its impacts.

Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the UN, H.E. Ms Tey Tsiong Guan, emphasized the need for collective action to address the crisis. “Climate change is a global challenge that requires immediate attention and cooperation,” she said. “We must work together to reduce emissions, invest in clean energy, and promote sustainable development.”

The Singapore government has set ambitious targets to reduce its carbon footprint by 80% by 2050 compared to 2000 levels. To achieve this goal, the city-state is investing heavily in renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable land use practices.

Singapore’s commitment to addressing climate change is also reflected in its participation in regional initiatives such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Climate Change Resilience Initiative. The initiative aims to enhance ASEAN’s resilience to the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable development in the region.

In addition, Singapore has been actively engaging with international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) to explore ways to promote sustainable trade practices and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international transportation.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change. “Singapore recognizes that no single country can tackle this global challenge alone,” he said. “We must work together with our neighbors, partners, and international organizations to build a more sustainable future.”

In conclusion, Singapore’s efforts to address climate change demonstrate its commitment to regional and global leadership on this critical issue. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change, Singapore’s proactive approach serves as a model for others to follow.
