U.S. Under Secretary John Bass Engages in Diplomatic Talks in Türkiye and Saudi Arabia

U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass has concluded a diplomatic visit to Ankara, Türkiye, and will continue his engagements in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in a regional effort to address the ongoing Syrian crisis and strengthen cooperation on regional security.

Meetings in Ankara Focus on Syria and Regional Security

During his visit to Türkiye from January 9-10, Under Secretary Bass held high-level discussions with senior Turkish officials centered on the situation in Syria. He underscored the importance of a peaceful, Syrian-led, and Syrian-owned political transition aligned with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254. The resolution calls for a ceasefire, political negotiations, and free elections as part of a long-term solution to the Syrian conflict.

Bass also addressed regional security concerns, emphasizing the need to prevent Syria from being exploited as a base for terrorism and reinforcing the continued commitment to the lasting defeat of ISIS. His talks aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation with Türkiye, a key NATO ally and strategic partner in the region.

Upcoming Multilateral Meetings in Riyadh

On January 11-13, Under Secretary Bass will visit Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to participate in a high-level multilateral meeting hosted by the Saudi government. The summit will bring together senior officials from regional and global partners to coordinate humanitarian assistance and support for the Syrian people amid the ongoing conflict and humanitarian challenges.

While in Riyadh, Bass will also engage in bilateral meetings with key Saudi officials and other partners to advance shared goals related to regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, and global security cooperation. The talks are expected to reinforce the U.S.-Saudi strategic partnership on multiple fronts, including diplomacy, security, and humanitarian support.

Strengthening Diplomatic Partnerships

These visits underscore the Biden administration’s continued diplomatic efforts to work closely with allies and partners in addressing complex challenges in the Middle East, particularly Syria’s prolonged crisis. The focus remains on achieving lasting peace, humanitarian relief, and countering threats posed by extremist groups in the region.
