Washington D.C., June 24, 2025 – The U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program has launched a new reward offer for information leading to the location and safe return of Mahmood Shah Habibi, an American businessman abducted in Afghanistan on August 10, 2022.
Habibi, a consultant for a Kabul-based telecommunications firm at the time of his disappearance, was taken from his vehicle in Kabul by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence. Since then, he has not been heard from and the Taliban has provided no information about his whereabouts or condition.
The Rewards for Justice program, which has paid over $250 million to more than 125 individuals worldwide since its inception in 1984, is urging anyone with information on Habibi’s disappearance to come forward. Individuals can submit tips via Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp at +1-202-702-7843.

The Taliban’s actions in detaining Habibi have raised concerns about human rights violations and the protection of civilians. The U.S. government is urging anyone with information on Habibi’s whereabouts to contact Rewards for Justice.
