The United States has praised Austria for successfully repatriating two women and three children from the Roj displaced persons camp in northeast Syria on March 1, with U.S. assistance. This operation underscores ongoing international efforts to address the humanitarian and security challenges posed by the prolonged detention of foreign nationals in the region.
Currently, approximately 23,000 individuals from more than 60 countries outside Syria remain housed in the al-Hol and Roj camps, with the vast majority being children under the age of 12. Among them, around 3,800 are European nationals representing over 35 different countries. These camps have long been a point of concern for global security, with experts warning of the potential for radicalization and the resurgence of ISIS-linked activity if a long-term solution is not implemented.
The U.S. government firmly supports the repatriation of foreign nationals as the most effective and sustainable approach to mitigating the risks associated with these camps. By facilitating the return of its citizens, Austria is playing a critical role in reducing security threats while ensuring that repatriated individuals undergo proper reintegration processes.
“We commend Austria for its leadership and cooperation in addressing this complex challenge,” said Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce. “Repatriating nationals is not just a humanitarian obligation—it is a crucial step in preventing the re-emergence of ISIS and promoting long-term regional stability.”
The United States continues to urge all countries with citizens in these camps to take responsibility for their nationals. The Trump administration has emphasized the importance of swift and coordinated international action to prevent extremist elements from exploiting vulnerable populations and destabilizing the region further.
Local authorities in northeast Syria have played a vital role in facilitating these repatriation efforts, working closely with international partners to manage security and logistical challenges.
As geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East continue to evolve, the United States remains committed to assisting its allies in repatriation efforts, reinforcing counterterrorism initiatives, and promoting lasting peace and stability in the region.
