U.S. and Türkiye Hold High-Level Talks on Syria, Gaza, and Bilateral Cooperation

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met in Ankara for a wide-ranging discussion on pressing international issues, including the situations in Syria and Gaza, as well as strengthening U.S.-Türkiye relations.

Key Discussions on Syria

Both leaders emphasized the urgency of stabilizing Syria and advancing efforts toward a future determined by the Syrian people. They discussed the need for an inclusive, non-sectarian interim government that protects minorities and women, preserves state institutions, and rejects alliances with extremist groups. Secretary Blinken noted a growing international consensus around these goals, highlighting that such a future for Syria would ensure global support and recognition while addressing decades of dictatorship and conflict.

Combating terrorism was another focal point, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to preventing extremist organizations like ISIS, DAESH, and PKK from exploiting instability in Syria. Blinken praised the longstanding U.S.-Türkiye partnership in eliminating ISIS’s territorial caliphate and stressed the importance of continued efforts to prevent a resurgence of terrorist threats.

Ceasefire Efforts in Gaza

The Gaza conflict was a critical agenda item. Both leaders reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire to end ongoing violence, which has disproportionately impacted civilians. Blinken commended Türkiye’s role in engaging with Hamas and underscored the importance of Hamas agreeing to a hostage and ceasefire agreement.

“We need to seize this opportunity to get the hostages home and secure a ceasefire,” Blinken said. Minister Fidan agreed, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of the U.S. and Türkiye in seeking a peaceful resolution and halting civilian casualties.

Bilateral and Defense Cooperation

In addition to regional issues, Blinken and Fidan discussed enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the defense sector. The leaders expressed optimism about continuing joint efforts to address mutual concerns and strengthen ties between the two nations.

Looking Ahead

The meeting marked Secretary Blinken’s likely final visit to Türkiye during his tenure, with both leaders reflecting on the progress achieved in U.S.-Türkiye relations under his leadership. Blinken expressed gratitude to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Fidan for their partnership and shared vision for addressing regional and global challenges.

Discussions on these issues are set to continue in Aqaba, Jordan, where Secretary Blinken will meet with other regional leaders to build consensus on advancing peace and stability in the Middle East.
