The U.S. Department of State is proud to announce the winners of this year’s Global Women’s Issues Awards for Courage and Leadership, also known as the International Women of Courage (IWOC) awards. These awards recognize women from around the world who are taking courageous action to promote peace, justice, and human rights.
This year’s IWOC awardees come from 14 countries and represent a wide range of fields, including journalism, activism, politics, and community leadership. They have demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of adversity, often putting themselves at risk to advance the cause of women’s empowerment and human rights.
The awardees are:
Zabib Musa Loro Bakhit from South Sudan
Namini Wijedasa from Sri Lanka
Amat Al-Salam Abdullah Abdo Al-Hajj from Yemen
Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award: Women Student Protest Leaders of Bangladesh
These women, along with nine other courageous individuals from around the world, will receive the IWOC award at a ceremony to be held in Washington, D.C. later this year.
The U.S. Department of State’s Global Women’s Issues Office recognizes the contributions of these women and honors their courage and leadership. The office works to promote women’s empowerment and human rights globally, and the IWOC awards are an important part of this effort.
