Thailand Becomes 51st Nation to Sign Artemis Accords, Expanding Global Space Collaboration

Thailand has officially joined the Artemis Accords, becoming the 51st signatory to the international framework that promotes sustainable and responsible space exploration. The signing ceremony took place in Bangkok, with Dr. Pakorn Apaphant, Executive Director of Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, signing on behalf of the Thai government. The event was attended by U.S. Ambassador Robert Godec and Thailand’s Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, Supamas Isarabhakdi.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson also contributed pre-recorded remarks, emphasizing the importance of Thailand’s participation in advancing global space exploration goals.

The Artemis Accords, established in 2020 by the United States and seven other founding countries, outline a practical set of principles designed to guide civil space activities responsibly. These include commitments to transparency, peaceful exploration, interoperability, and sustainable use of space resources.

“Thailand’s signing of the Artemis Accords underscores the strength of our enduring alliance and our shared commitment to tackling challenges both on Earth and in outer space,” said U.S. officials, reflecting on the two nations’ 190-year history of diplomatic ties.

Thailand joins a growing coalition of nations, including the United States and 50 other countries, such as Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, India, and the Republic of Korea, in committing to responsible space exploration. The Department of State and NASA jointly lead U.S. efforts in promoting and implementing the Accords, ensuring a unified global approach to future space endeavors.

As international interest in space exploration intensifies, the Artemis Accords serve as a vital framework for collaboration and the sustainable use of extraterrestrial resources. With Thailand’s inclusion, the coalition further solidifies its mission to ensure that the future of space exploration benefits humanity as a whole.
