International Community Condemns Myanmar Military Regime on Coup Anniversary

Marking the fourth anniversary of Myanmar’s military coup, a coalition of nations including Australia, Canada, the European Union, South Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States has issued a joint statement denouncing the continued rule of the military junta and the widespread human rights violations it has inflicted upon the people of Myanmar.

The statement highlights the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the military’s oppressive governance, with nearly 20 million people now in need of humanitarian aid, including 15.2 million requiring urgent food assistance. The statement also condemns the military’s increasing use of airstrikes, which have led to mass civilian casualties and the destruction of essential infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship. Reports indicate that airstrikes have increased nearly 25-fold since 2021, with an average of three attacks per day, even in areas with no active conflict.

The international coalition calls for an immediate de-escalation of violence and demands that the Myanmar military allow unhindered humanitarian access across the country. The statement urges all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and to fully adhere to international humanitarian and human rights laws. Additionally, the joint declaration highlights the growing transnational threats emanating from Myanmar, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, and organized crime, which threaten regional stability.

The coalition reaffirms its support for ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and calls for strengthened collaboration between ASEAN and the United Nations to address the ongoing crisis. The statement also emphasizes the urgent need for accountability for atrocities committed by the military and the immediate release of political prisoners. The coalition remains steadfast in its commitment to standing with the people of Myanmar in their pursuit of democracy, peace, and human rights.
