Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Dialogue Between US and Brazil

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and strengthening the nuclear nonproliferation regime, following a recent disarmament and non-proliferation dialogue with Brazil in Washington, D.C.

On May 12, officials from both countries engaged in comprehensive discussions on a range of critical disarmament and non-proliferation issues. The US delegation was co-led by Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability, while the Brazilian delegation was headed by Director of the Department of Strategic, Defense, and Disarmament Affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The dialogue covered a range of topics, including arms control with Russia and China, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review cycle and other related multilateral forums, naval nuclear propulsion, emerging technology, and safeguards by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The two sides also discussed the challenges posed by biological and chemical weapons.

The US remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing the threats posed by nuclear proliferation, ensuring a safer and more secure world for future generations. As part of this effort, the country continues to lead efforts in promoting disarmament and non-proliferation initiatives globally.

This dialogue marks the ninth meeting between the two nations under the Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Dialogue framework, aimed at fostering cooperation and addressing common security concerns.
