In a significant development, a Thai delegation led by Mr. Bolbongse Vangphaen, Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, has forged closer cooperation with China in tackling transboundary haze pollution under the CLEAR Sky Strategy.
On 23-25 July 2025, the Thai delegation visited Beijing to discuss strengthening cooperation with China in addressing this pressing environmental issue. The visit was part of a follow-up to the implementation of the trilateral Joint Plan of Action – CLEAR Sky Strategy launched on 29 October 2024.
During the meeting, the delegation exchanged views and experiences with Chinese officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Ecology and Environment, ASEAN-China Centre, Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning, and other relevant institutions. The discussions focused on technical cooperation in agriculture, green innovation, Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), capacity building, and environmental protection.
The Thai delegation also explored cooperation opportunities with China in developing monitoring centres, fire risk maps, and raising public awareness about transboundary haze pollution. These initiatives aim to strengthen collaboration among Thailand, Lao PDR, and Myanmar in addressing the issue.
The CLEAR Sky Strategy is a trilateral cooperation endeavour aimed at tackling air pollution and haze in the Mekong Subregion and ASEAN. The Thai government's commitment to this strategy reflects its efforts to promote regional cooperation and address pressing environmental challenges.
This development highlights Thailand's growing diplomatic engagement with China on key global issues, including environmental protection and sustainable development.
Conclusion
The strengthening of cooperation between Thailand and China on transboundary haze pollution under the CLEAR Sky Strategy underscores the importance of regional diplomacy in addressing pressing global challenges. As a member of ASEAN, Thailand continues to play a vital role in promoting regional cooperation and addressing common challenges with its key partners.
