The Swedish government has announced a significant boost to Ukraine’s defence capabilities, committing €3.6 million in support for the country’s demining and drone technologies.
In a move aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s self-defence efforts, the Government of Sweden has tasked the Swedish Armed Forces with providing SEK 40 million (EUR 3.6 million) in support to two key capability coalitions within the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) framework. The Demining Coalition will receive an equal amount to the Drone Coalition.
According to Defence Minister Pål Jonson, this support “ensures that Ukraine can develop its drone technology and mine clearance capabilities.” This, he believes, will help the Ukrainian army and society, ultimately contributing to the country’s self-defence efforts.
The UDCG is a multilateral coalition of 57 countries, established by the United States, to coordinate international defence materiel procurement, production, and sustainability efforts in support of Ukraine’s self-defence. The countries’ defence ministers meet regularly at NATO Headquarters or virtually in Ramstein, Germany.
Sweden has been a member of six capability coalitions within the UDCG framework. This latest commitment highlights Sweden’s continued commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defence and security needs.
The €3.6 million in support is part of the 18th military support package to Ukraine, which marks another significant milestone in Sweden’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its partnership with Ukraine.
In conclusion, Sweden’s commitment to Ukraine’s defence capabilities underscores the country’s dedication to supporting Ukraine’s self-defence efforts and contributing to regional stability.
