In a bid to strengthen bilateral relations, Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa is set to embark on a two-day visit to Cairo, Egypt, from May 26-27. During his trip, Mr. Dousa will focus on promoting trade and humanitarian issues, with a particular emphasis on addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
The acute situation in Gaza has sparked international concern, with many calling for increased humanitarian aid to reach the civilian population. Sweden is among those that have been vocal about the need for urgent action, and Mr. Dousa will be meeting with humanitarian organisations to discuss possible solutions.
According to the Minister, “We must continue to do everything we can and pressure Israel in order to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the civilian population in Gaza.” The situation on the ground is dire, with lorries full of urgently needed food, water, and medicine waiting at the border to be allowed in.
On the trade front, Mr. Dousa will be joined by Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El Khatib to kick off the second Egypt-Sweden Business Forum. The forum aims to promote bilateral trade and investment opportunities between the two countries, particularly in areas such as life sciences, transport, energy, and telecommunications.
Sweden has identified significant opportunities for trade and investment with Egypt, including the country’s major investment plans for the green transition and the expansion of its healthcare systems. In fact, Swedish exports to Egypt have doubled over the past five years, totaling SEK 14 billion last year alone.
During his visit, Mr. Dousa will also meet with other Egyptian ministers to further business opportunities for Swedish companies and learn more about Egypt’s views on the situation in Gaza. The Minister emphasized that “Egypt is Sweden’s largest trade partner in Africa and offers good opportunities for trade and investment.”
