Indonesia has once again underscored its unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, presenting a draft resolution titled “Demand for Ceasefire in Gaza” at the UN General Assembly’s Emergency Session on December 11, 2024. The proposal aims to end the ongoing violence in Gaza, where Israeli military operations and blockades have resulted in extensive civilian casualties and widespread suffering.
In a poignant address during the session, Indonesia’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arrmanatha Nasir, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Only through a ceasefire can we protect millions of civilians in Gaza, alleviate their suffering, and take steps towards justice and peace.” Nasir’s remarks came as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, with more than 150,000 Palestinians reported killed over the past 14 months—70% of whom are women and children. Additionally, an estimated 1.9 million people have been displaced, forced to flee without access to food, water, or medical supplies.
“The conditions in Gaza are dire,” Nasir said, describing the situation as “very terrible and like the apocalypse.” He called on the international community to act immediately to prevent further loss of life and destruction, urging for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire.
The resolution presented by Indonesia highlights the failure of past international efforts, including a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly at the end of 2023 that called for a ceasefire and protection for civilians in Gaza. Despite the support of 153 countries, the call was not implemented, and the violence has continued unabated.
“How many lives could have been saved if the international community had taken action? How many more innocent people must die before the conscience of the world is awakened?” Nasir asked. He stressed that the global community must hold Israel accountable for its actions and ensure that international law is respected.
In addition to the call for a ceasefire, the session also addressed a resolution proposed by Ireland to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This resolution comes in response to new legislation passed by the Israeli Parliament that restricts UNRWA’s operations in Palestinian territories, potentially cutting millions of Palestinian refugees off from essential services such as education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid.
The Emergency Session was convened after the United States vetoed a similar ceasefire resolution at the UN Security Council on November 20, 2024. Despite the veto, the resolutions at the General Assembly garnered strong support. The ceasefire resolution passed with 158 votes in favor, while the UNRWA resolution received 159 votes, signaling widespread international support for Palestinian rights and humanitarian aid.
Indonesia’s commitment to the Palestinian cause is not limited to diplomatic efforts. The Indonesian government has been a staunch supporter of UNRWA, with its financial contributions to the agency increasing by 600% since 2023. The country has also pledged to take a more active role in supporting efforts for a ceasefire, with President Prabowo Subianto repeatedly affirming Indonesia’s readiness to assist in peace efforts in Gaza.
“The time has come for the world to unite and stop the violence in Gaza. It is time to demonstrate our commitment to justice, humanity, and a better future for the Palestinian people,” concluded Vice Minister Nasir.
Indonesia’s proactive role at the UN underscores its enduring commitment to the Palestinian people and to global peace efforts. The passing of both resolutions represents a significant step in the ongoing struggle to secure lasting peace and justice for Gaza.
