Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will embark on a three-day visit to Thailand and Sri Lanka from April 3-6, 2025, marking his third trip to the latter country. The visit is at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister H.E. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who has extended an official invitation for Modi's participation in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit on April 4, 2025.
This will be the first physical meeting of BIMSTEC Leaders since the 4th summit in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2018. The theme of the upcoming summit is "BIMSTEC – Prosperous, Resilient and Open," which aims to infuse greater momentum into regional cooperation and partnership. Modi will engage with his counterparts to discuss ways to bolster BIMSTEC cooperation and explore institution and capacity-building measures.
During his visit, Modi will also meet with Thai Prime Minister H.E. Paetongtarn Shinawatra on April 3 to review bilateral cooperation and chart the future of their partnership. The two leaders share a strong civilizational bond, with cultural, linguistic, and religious ties underpinning their relationship as maritime neighbours.
From Thailand, Modi will travel to Sri Lanka for an official visit from April 4-6, at the invitation of President H.E. Mr. Anura Kumara Disanayaka. During his visit, Modi will hold discussions with the President to review progress made on areas of cooperation agreed upon in the Joint Vision for "Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future" adopted during the Sri Lankan President's State Visit to India.
Modi's visit will also include meetings with senior dignitaries and political leaders. He will travel to Anuradhapura for the inauguration of development projects implemented with Indian financial assistance, marking his second visit to the country since 2019. This trip is part of regular high-level engagements between India and Sri Lanka, aimed at deepening their multi-faceted partnership.
Prime Minister Modi's visit to Thailand and Sri Lanka will reaffirm India's commitment to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy, 'Act East' policy, 'MAHASAGAR' vision, and the Indo-Pacific vision.
