The Government of India has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka following an incident involving the Sri Lankan Navy firing on a fishing vessel carrying 13 Indian fishermen near Delft Island in the early hours of January 28, 2025.
The firing resulted in injuries to five fishermen, two of whom sustained serious wounds and are currently being treated at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. The remaining three, who suffered minor injuries, have received medical attention. Indian Consulate officials in Jaffna visited the injured fishermen at the hospital to assess their condition and extend support to them and their families.
Diplomatic Action Taken
In response to the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi to lodge a formal protest. Simultaneously, India’s High Commission in Colombo raised the issue with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demanding accountability and adherence to existing bilateral agreements regarding the treatment of fishermen.
Emphasis on Humane Treatment
The Government of India reiterated its long-standing position on the humane and humanitarian treatment of issues concerning fishermen, particularly in the context of livelihood challenges faced by fishing communities. “The use of force is unacceptable under any circumstances. Existing understandings between the two governments must be strictly observed to prevent such incidents in the future,” stated a spokesperson from the Ministry of External Affairs.
Call for Resolution
This incident has once again highlighted the need for stronger mechanisms to address ongoing issues between Indian fishermen and the Sri Lankan authorities. India has consistently advocated for peaceful and cooperative measures to resolve disputes and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
The Government of India remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of Indian fishermen and will continue to engage with Sri Lanka to ensure such incidents do not recur.
