External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar completed a significant tour of Qatar and Bahrain from December 6 to December 9, 2024. His visit underscored India’s focus on deepening bilateral ties with key partners in the Gulf region while advancing discussions on regional and global issues.

Key Highlights of the Visit

In Qatar

  1. Participation in Doha Forum:
    • EAM attended the 22nd edition of the Doha Forum, participating in a panel discussion on “Conflict Resolution in a New Era.”
    • He highlighted the impacts of ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine on global trade and emphasized the importance of inclusive diplomacy in addressing such challenges.
  2. Bilateral Meetings:
    • EAM held discussions with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, focusing on strengthening strategic and economic ties.
    • He also met Qatar’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, H.E. Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, and Minister of State Ahmed Al Sayed to explore avenues for boosting bilateral trade and investment.

In Bahrain

  1. 4th High Joint Commission (HJC) Meeting:
    • Co-chaired the HJC alongside Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.
    • Reviewed progress in areas like trade, healthcare, energy, security, and people-to-people ties. Discussions also included emerging sectors like space, FinTech, and education.
  2. High-Level Engagements:
    • Met with Bahrain’s Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, and expressed gratitude for Bahrain’s support to the Indian community.
  3. Addressing Strategic Issues:
    • Spoke at the Concluding Plenary Session of the 20th IISS Manama Dialogue on “Whither Regional Strategic Cooperation,” emphasizing India’s commitment to regional security, stability, and development.
  4. Community Engagement and Cultural Heritage:
    • Addressed the Indian diaspora, highlighting their role in strengthening India-Bahrain ties.
    • Visited the historic 200-year-old Shreenathji Temple in Manama, reflecting India’s rich cultural connections with Bahrain.
