Minister Anand Welcomes Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister in Historic Diplomatic Visit

Ottawa, Ontario – June 9, 2025

In a significant development, Global Affairs Canada announced today that Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand will welcome Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel to Ottawa from June 10 to 12, 2025. This marks the first time a high-ranking official from Luxembourg has visited Canada since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1943.

During his three-day visit, Minister Bettel will inaugurate Luxembourg’s new Embassy in Ottawa, highlighting 80 years of bilateral relations between the two nations. The Embassy opening ceremony will be attended by dignitaries from both countries, including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Rob Oliphant. To commemorate this occasion, a reception will be hosted by Luxembourg to mark the National Day on June 23.

Minister Anand and Minister Bettel are expected to engage in discussions on strengthening strategic and commercial relations between Canada and Luxembourg. The two nations have enjoyed strong trade ties, with Luxembourg subsidiaries contributing over $6.8 billion to the Canadian economy in 2022. This partnership is a testament to the enduring bond between the two countries.

The visit also marks an important milestone in Canada’s diplomatic efforts in Europe. Minister Bettel’s presence demonstrates Luxembourg’s commitment to deepening relations with like-minded partners in North America. As Minister Anand noted, “The opening of the Embassy of Luxembourg in Ottawa marks the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between our countries.”

Canada and Luxembourg have a rich history dating back to 1940, when Canada provided temporary refuge to the Grand Duke’s family following the German invasion of Luxembourg. Since then, bilateral relations have grown steadily, with significant investments from Luxembourg subsidiaries in various sectors.

The arrival of Luxembourg’s first resident Ambassador, Jean Claude Kugener, in December 2024 marked a new era in diplomatic cooperation between the two nations. Today’s visit solidifies Canada’s position as a key partner for Luxembourg in North America.

Minister Anand and Minister Bettel will work together to advance their countries’ shared interests, including maintaining a strong global economy and bolstering the rules-based international order.

In conclusion, Minister Anand’s historic diplomatic visit with Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel marks an exciting new chapter in Canada-Luxembourg relations. As two like-minded nations, they will continue to strengthen strategic and commercial ties, fostering a stronger bond between their countries and promoting peace, stability, and prosperity around the world.
