Japan and Cambodia Strengthen Bilateral Ties Amid Regional Developments

In a significant diplomatic development, the 2nd Cambodia-Japan Senior Officials’ Talks (SOTs) concluded on December 18, 2024, in Phnom Penh, bringing both countries closer to realizing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The talks, co-chaired by His Excellency UNG Rachana, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and His Excellency FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, focused on deepening bilateral cooperation in various sectors.

The SOTs is a crucial mechanism established to discuss ways and means to promote the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. During the talks, both sides exchanged views on regional and international developments, particularly those of common interests and concerns. They noted with satisfaction the frequent exchanges of visits and communications between the two countries at all levels, reflecting a strong commitment to further deepening their partnership.

Japan highlighted its intention to implement the New Cooperation Approach for Cambodia, focusing on three main areas: social infrastructure development, maritime connectivity, and humanitarian mine action. The country expressed its willingness to cooperate with Cambodia to develop the Sihanoukville Autopark into a regional hub. The Cambodian side acknowledged that this approach supports their government’s Pentagonal Strategy-Phase I and expressed appreciation for Japan’s enormous assistance to support the Kingdom’s development.

During His Excellency FUNAKOSHI Takehiro’s visit, he also paid a courtesy call on His Excellency PRAK Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The two leaders discussed ways to broaden and enhance cooperation between their countries at both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

This diplomatic engagement underscores Cambodia’s growing importance in regional affairs, particularly within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Japan’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Cambodia reflects the country’s desire to promote peace, stability, and economic growth in the region.
