Cambodia Strengthens ASEAN Unity and Diplomacy at Retreat in Lao PDR

On January 29, 2024, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, SOK Chenda Sophea, attended the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ (AMM) Retreat in Luang Prabang, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR), as part of its ASEAN Chairmanship under the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.”

The meeting saw a strong emphasis on regional cooperation and shared priorities among member states. The ministers discussed ways to further advance ASEAN Community Building, with 92% of actions under the AEC Blueprint 2025 and 97% of strategic measures of the ASCC Blueprint 2025 completed or in progress.

Furthermore, the Ministers stressed the importance of an inclusive and holistic approach in developing the Strategic Plans of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which is co-chaired by Lao PDR. They also highlighted the significance of strengthening ASEAN Centrality through the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), encouraging external partners to contribute to its implementation.

Cambodia’s commitment to regional cooperation was evident during the meeting, as Deputy Prime Minister SOK Chenda Sophea welcomed progress in implementing the objective-based Roadmap for Timor-Leste’s Full Membership in ASEAN. The country also reiterated its support for Myanmar’s peace process and welcomed initiatives by Thailand and Myanmar to scale up humanitarian assistance.

The AMM Retreat provided an opportunity for Cambodia to strengthen bilateral relations with neighboring countries, including Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. The Deputy Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from these nations, discussing ways to enhance cooperation and exchange views on common interests and concerns.
