In a move aimed at bolstering Canada's relationships with key transatlantic allies, Global Affairs Canada announced today that Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand will embark on bilateral visits to the United Kingdom and France from June 6 to 7, 2025.
The two-day trip marks an important step in deepening cooperation between Canada and its long-standing partners. During her visit, Minister Anand will engage with senior officials, including Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy in London, and Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot in Paris.
In London, the two ministers are expected to discuss ways to reinforce the Canada-UK relationship, focusing on strengthening security and defence collaboration and expanding economic cooperation. Minister Anand will also attend a meeting of G7 heads of mission and a round-table discussion with business leaders on defence and economic growth.
In Paris, the minister is set to meet with her French counterpart to strengthen Canada-France ties on shared priorities such as defence and security, democratic values, and the promotion of the French language. The two countries' consecutive G7 presidencies will also be a key focus of their discussions.
"Canada has always had close partnerships with France and the United Kingdom, and in this time of economic and geopolitical uncertainty, it is crucial that Canada further strengthens its relationships with reliable international partners," Minister Anand said. "I look forward to meeting with my counterparts and other leaders during my trip to emphasize the importance of growing this cooperation for our countries' economic and political security."
Canada's relationship with both the UK and France is built on a shared history, common values, and a long tradition of strategic partnership. The two countries have collaborated closely on numerous fronts, including security and defence, multilateral organizations, and international issues.
The trip is seen as an opportunity for Minister Anand to reinforce Canada's commitment to growing its ties with key partners in the face of increasing global uncertainty.
