In a bid to strengthen regional ties and address pressing global challenges, Singapore has reaffirmed its commitment to collaboration with neighboring countries in the Asia-Pacific region. At the recent Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Cambodia, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, underscored the importance of cooperation on climate change, counter-terrorism, and disarmament.
Dr Balakrishnan emphasized that ASEAN must remain at the forefront of addressing these pressing global issues, citing the significant contributions made by regional organizations such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat and the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change. The Minister also highlighted Singapore’s commitment to supporting the development of a comprehensive and sustainable regional framework to address transboundary haze pollution.
Singapore has also reaffirmed its long-standing engagement with APEC member economies, including the United States, Japan, Australia, and South Korea. At the recent APEC Economic Ministers Meeting in San Francisco, Singapore presented its vision for a free trade area that would promote economic integration and cooperation among regional economies.
In addition, Singapore will continue to play an active role in international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The country is committed to contributing to the development of global standards on aviation safety, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
On the issue of cybersecurity, Singapore has joined forces with its regional partners to strengthen regional cooperation and capacity-building efforts. At the recent East Asia Summit in Cambodia, Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information, Joseph Schooling, stressed the need for enhanced cooperation among regional countries to address emerging security threats.
Overall, Singapore’s engagement with regional and international organizations is seen as a key aspect of its foreign policy strategy, aimed at promoting regional stability, economic growth, and sustainable development.
