The Republic of Angola will be represented by its President, Joao Manuel Goncalves Laurenco, as he embarks on a state visit to India from May 1-4, 2025. This marks the first-ever bilateral state visit by an Angolan president to India and comes ahead of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
During his visit, President Laurenco will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan on May 3, 2025. He is expected to hold discussions with Indian President Droupadi Murmu, who will host a banquet in honour of the visiting dignitary. The two leaders are also scheduled to have delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will host a luncheon in his honour.
The visit is seen as an opportunity for both countries to strengthen their bilateral ties, which have been built over the years on a vibrant energy partnership. Bilateral trade between India and Angola has grown significantly, reaching $4.192 billion during 2023-2024. The two nations also enjoy a strong development partnership, capacity-building cooperation, and defence relationship.
President Laurenco will participate in a business event in New Delhi on May 4, 2025, aimed at promoting investment and commercial linkages between the two countries. Several MoUs/Agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, which will give a fillip to bilateral relations.
India and Angola have enjoyed warm and friendly relations for many years, with both nations supporting each other's candidature at various multilateral fora, including the UN. This state visit marks an important milestone in their relationship, as it comes ahead of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
