The United States will be represented in New York by senior bureau official Paul Watzlavick, who will lead the U.S. delegation to the Third Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), from April 28 – May 2, 2025.
The NPT is a cornerstone of the global nuclear nonproliferation regime, aiming to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote disarmament. As part of its efforts to strengthen this regime, the U.S. government will engage in discussions with other nations to address emerging threats posed by nuclear proliferation and nuclear war.
Watzlavick's visit to New York marks an important step in the U.S. commitment to preserving and enhancing the NPT for future generations. The conference provides a platform for countries to review the operation of the treaty, making adjustments as needed to ensure its continued effectiveness.
The United States has long been at the forefront of addressing nuclear nonproliferation issues, and this visit represents a continuation of that effort. With the Third Preparatory Committee meeting, the U.S. delegation will work closely with other nations to advance shared goals on arms control and nonproliferation.
As one of the most comprehensive international treaties in existence, the NPT has been instrumental in preventing nuclear proliferation since its adoption in 1968. The upcoming review conference promises to be a crucial moment in sustaining this regime's effectiveness and addressing emerging challenges.
