United States Welcomes Release of MV Galaxy Leader Crew Members, Calls for Further Action

The United States warmly welcomes the long-awaited release of 25 crew members from the MV Galaxy Leader, who hail from Bulgaria, Mexico, the Philippines, Romania, and Ukraine. The crew had been unlawfully detained for over a year after the vessel was seized by Houthi forces in the Red Sea. The United States extends its heartfelt thanks to the Sultanate of Oman for its instrumental role in facilitating the crew’s release through timely and effective diplomatic efforts.

Ongoing Concerns Over Houthi Actions

While the crew’s release is a positive step forward, the United States remains deeply concerned about the ongoing detention of the Galaxy Leader vessel, which continues to be unlawfully held by the Houthis. The vessel, a stolen property, is a symbol of the broader threat posed by Houthi activities, which have jeopardized the safety of seafarers, obstructed critical humanitarian aid, and disrupted regional economies.

The U.S. government is also deeply troubled by the Houthis’ continued detention of hundreds of local staff members working for the United Nations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and diplomatic missions across Yemen. Among those unlawfully detained are dozens of current and former Yemeni staff members employed by the U.S. government, who face harsh and unjust conditions based on baseless accusations.

Urging Immediate Action for Regional Stability

The United States firmly reiterates its call for the Houthis to permanently cease all unlawful attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and surrounding waters, particularly those associated with Israel. The U.S. government continues to work with international partners to ensure that such aggressive and destabilizing actions are held to account.

Moreover, the United States demands the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees still held by the Houthis. The U.S. stands united with the international community in calling for an end to the unlawful detentions and violence, and for the restoration of peace and security to the region.
