In recognition of Human Rights Day, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms worldwide. Speaking on this important day, Secretary Blinken emphasized that the United States was founded on the belief that all people are created equal, holding certain inalienable rights that must be upheld.
“The United States was founded on the idea that all persons are created equal and hold certain inalienable rights,” Secretary Blinken stated. “In the centuries that have passed, the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms has become a pillar of U.S. foreign policy, in which we reaffirm that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
In his remarks, Blinken acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by human rights defenders around the world, especially in countries where repressive governments continue to violate these rights. These governments often justify such violations under the pretext of security, yet Blinken asserted that true national security can only be achieved when human rights are protected, not suppressed.
The Secretary of State highlighted the bravery and resilience of those who champion human rights, often at great personal risk. “The United States stands with human rights defenders in all corners of the world who push back against repression and advocate for respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Blinken continued. “These advocates have repeatedly demonstrated their strength, courage, and leadership, and they deserve our strongest continued support.”
While acknowledging the challenges that remain, the United States remains committed to the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly 76 years ago. Blinken stressed the importance of global solidarity in advancing human rights, asserting that the world must continue to strive toward a future in which all nations uphold these principles and affirm that human rights belong to everyone, everywhere.
