Secretary Blinken Holds Call with DRC President Tshisekedi, Urges Action on Eastern Crisis

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken engaged in a detailed discussion with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi to address the ongoing crisis in the eastern regions of the country. The call underscored the United States’ commitment to supporting stability and peace in the region, as well as its emphasis on multilateral efforts to resolve the escalating conflict.

During the conversation, Secretary Blinken expressed appreciation for President Tshisekedi’s active participation in the Luanda Process, a diplomatic initiative led by Angolan President João Lourenço to de-escalate tensions and foster dialogue. The Secretary commended President Tshisekedi’s willingness to engage in recent talks, highlighting these efforts as critical steps toward resolving the violence and humanitarian crisis affecting millions in eastern DRC.

The Secretary reiterated the U.S. position that all armed groups, including M23 and Rwandan Defense Forces, must immediately cease hostilities and withdraw from contested positions in the region. He emphasized that these actions are essential for restoring stability and creating an environment conducive to lasting peace.

Secretary Blinken also encouraged President Tshisekedi to advance plans for neutralizing the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), another armed group contributing to insecurity in the region. He acknowledged the complexities of disarming such groups but stressed the importance of collaborative and coordinated strategies.

In addition, Secretary Blinken welcomed President Tshisekedi’s cooperation with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has been facilitating mediation efforts with M23. He highlighted this partnership as a positive example of regional leadership and international support working in tandem to address shared challenges.

The conversation reaffirmed the United States’ support for initiatives aimed at fostering stability, addressing the root causes of conflict, and providing humanitarian relief to those affected. Secretary Blinken reiterated the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring accountability for those perpetuating violence.

This call reflects the broader U.S. commitment to engaging with partners in Africa to promote peace, security, and sustainable development in regions facing protracted crises. Secretary Blinken assured President Tshisekedi of continued U.S. assistance and collaboration as the DRC navigates these challenges.
