Thailand Strengthens Ties with Eurasian Economic Union through High-Level Diplomacy

In a significant development in regional diplomacy, the Thai government has taken steps to bolster its economic ties with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), a five-member bloc comprising Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. On May 26, 2025, Deputy Director-General of the Department of European Affairs, Ms. Somrudee Pupornanek, met with key officials from the EEC to discuss potential trade cooperation and the launch of Thailand-EAEU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.

The meeting marked a positive milestone in Thailand's efforts to expand its economic footprint in the region. Ms. Pupornanek highlighted the country's dynamic cooperation with all five EAEU Member States, emphasizing the need for increased collaboration to achieve mutually beneficial goals. Mr. Mikael Belluyan, Director of the Integration Development Department at the EEC, expressed a willingness to enhance future cooperation with Thailand, underscoring the potential for significant economic benefits.

Furthermore, Ms. Pupornanek engaged in productive discussions with Deputy Director-General of the Third Asia Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Ms. Ekaterina Bakeeva. The two officials welcomed the increasing dynamism in Thailand-Russia relations, which have been strengthened through regular high-level visits. They also exchanged views on regional issues, including the situations in Ukraine and Myanmar, as well as Thailand's aspirations to join BRICS.

In addition to these key meetings, Ms. Pupornanek participated in a roundtable discussion with experts from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), led by Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova. The session focused on regional issues, including developments in Myanmar and Ukraine, as well as the evolving relations between Russia and ASEAN Member States.

These diplomatic efforts demonstrate Thailand's commitment to fostering strong economic ties with key regional players. By engaging in high-level diplomacy and exploring new avenues for cooperation, the Thai government aims to promote its national interests while contributing to regional stability and prosperity.

In conclusion, Thailand's recent diplomatic activities underscore its proactive approach to promoting regional cooperation and economic development. As the country continues to navigate an increasingly complex global landscape, these efforts are likely to play a significant role in shaping its foreign policy priorities and driving growth in the years to come.
