Thailand Strengthens Commitment to Gender Equality in Southeast Asia

In a statement released on 30 May 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its continued support for gender equality and women’s empowerment in Southeast Asia, aligning with Thailand’s vision as an ASEAN Coordinator on Sustainable Development Cooperation.

The announcement comes ahead of the launch of the second edition of the ASEAN Gender Outlook report, a flagship document developed jointly by UN Women, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the ASEAN Committee on Women. This report assesses ASEAN’s progress in implementing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a specific focus on gender equality for women and girls.

On 28 May 2025, H.E. Mrs. Phantipha Iamsudha Ekarohit, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to ASEAN, played host to an event titled “ASEAN Gender Outlook: From Insights to Action — Harnessing Gender Data for Inclusive Policy and Decision-Making in Support of ASEAN Community Vision 2045”. The event brought together experts from across the region, including academics, officials from ASEAN Member States and Dialogue Partners, as well as representatives from UN Women Indonesia.

The gathering aimed to promote concrete actions towards advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls. It featured a panel discussion on the collection and use of gender-based statistical data for evidence-based analysis of access to and benefits from policy implementation. The event was attended by over 100 participants, representing diplomatic corps, international organizations, and agencies based in Jakarta.

Thailand’s commitment to advancing gender equality is rooted in its vision as an ASEAN Coordinator on Sustainable Development Cooperation. The country recognizes the importance of inclusive and sustainable development, ensuring that no one is left behind.

In conclusion, Thailand’s continued support for gender equality in Southeast Asia underscores its dedication to creating a more just and equitable society. By harnessing data and promoting concrete actions, the country looks to drive progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and achieve the vision of an ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
