Thailand Leads International Efforts to Combat Online Scams in Celebration of OSCE Partnership Anniversary

In a statement released on 4 Jun 2025, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its hosting of a Special Workshop on “Combatting Online Scams” in Vienna, Austria, as part of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Asian Partners for Co-operation Group (APCG) Meeting. This event marked the 25th anniversary of Thailand-OSCE partnership and brought together representatives from over 60 countries to address this growing transnational threat.

The workshop, co-hosted by Thailand and Malta, was attended by H.E. Ms. Pattarat Hongthong, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the OSCE, alongside a Thai delegation led by Professor Wisit Wisitsora-at, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES). The event featured keynotes from esteemed experts, including Professor Wisitsora-at, Chair of the ASEAN Working Group on Anti-Online Scam, who delivered a keynote speech highlighting national and regional policy frameworks against online scams.

Other notable panelists included representatives from Thailand’s Bank of Thailand, Securities and Exchange Commission, National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, and the Anti-Online Scam Operation Centre, MDES. These experts showcased Thailand’s legal frameworks and exchanged best practices in preventing and countering online scams with panelists from public and private sectors, including online platform operators from OSCE and Asian Partners.

The APCG Meeting, an ambassadorial-level meeting between 57 OSCE Participating States and 5 Asian Partners for cooperation, emphasized the importance of promoting cooperation between the public and private sectors at both regional and international levels. Key points discussed included the responsibility of digital platform service providers to the public, the need for information sharing and coordination among law enforcement agencies, as well as the use of technological tools such as AI and Big Data to detect crimes and prosecute online scammers.

The workshop serves as a significant step in addressing this pressing global issue, with Thailand playing a crucial role in regional and international efforts. By fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing, these initiatives aim to enhance cybersecurity measures and protect citizens from the increasing threat of online scams.
