“Sweden Ups Military Capabilities with New Air Defence Systems Purchase”

In a move aimed at bolstering its military capabilities, the Swedish government has announced plans to procure new air defence systems for the Army’s brigades and battlegroups. The decision, made by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Minister for Defence Pål Jonson on Monday 23 June, marks a significant step towards increasing the war organisation’s operational capability.

The key driver behind this purchase is the urgent need for air defence capability, highlighted by Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. Based on assignment from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, German authorities have signed an agreement with Diehl, a German defence manufacturer, to procure seven IRIS-T SLM (Surface-Launched Medium-range) air defence systems on behalf of Sweden.

The total contract value is approximately SEK 9 billion, making it one of the largest military procurements in recent Swedish history. Each IRIS-T SLM air defence system consists of vehicles with multifunction radar, command and control systems for airspace surveillance and targeting, two launchers with missiles, and support elements with vehicles for reloading, reserve parts, and maintenance.

The order comprises a total of 49 vehicles, which will complement Sweden’s existing air defence systems, including the Patriot, IRIS-T SLS, and RBS 70 systems. Ukraine has been using the IRIS-T SLM system effectively in its defence of airspace, while other countries such as Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, and Slovenia have also placed orders for the system.

The IRIS-T SLM is considered one of the latest and most effective air defence systems on the market, capable of protecting against a range of threats including unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, combat aircraft, and cruise missiles. Sweden will first take delivery of the systems in 2028.

The decision to procure new air defence systems is part of Sweden’s broader efforts to strengthen its military capabilities and ensure national security. The IRIS-T SLM system will play a critical role in enhancing the Army’s operational capability, providing an additional layer of protection against aerial threats.

In conclusion, the Swedish government’s announcement marks an important step towards bolstering the country’s military capabilities. The procurement of new air defence systems is a testament to Sweden’s commitment to national security and its ability to adapt to emerging threats.
