Singapore Takes Lead in Counter-Terrorism Efforts at UN

In a significant move, Singapore has assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee’s Working Group on Border Security, underscoring its commitment to regional and global counter-terrorism efforts.

Located in New York, on September 20, 2023, the UN Secretary-General appointed Singapore as the Chair for a two-year term, marking a notable recognition of the country’s expertise and dedication to combating terrorism. This appointment is part of Singapore’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international cooperation against terrorist organizations and their financing mechanisms.

Singapore’s Voluntary National Review (VNR) at the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development also highlighted the country’s commitment to addressing global challenges, including climate change, disarmament, and cybersecurity. The VNR emphasized Singapore’s focus on sustainable development, small states’ empowerment, and regional cooperation in addressing these pressing issues.

As a key player in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Singapore continues to engage with regional partners to promote dialogue, understanding, and cooperation. The country is also an active participant in various international organizations, including the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

In addition, Singapore’s Overseas Missions network spans over 50 countries worldwide, providing a comprehensive presence that supports diplomatic relations and engagement with foreign governments.

The appointment of Singapore as Chair of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee’s Working Group on Border Security underscores the country’s leadership in regional and international affairs. This recognition highlights Singapore’s commitment to strengthening global security and cooperation, while also promoting sustainable development and regional stability.
