Singapore Reinforces Regional Cooperation on Climate Change and Counter-Terrorism

Singapore, December 10, 2023 – In a move to strengthen regional cooperation on critical global issues, the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced its active participation in two key international forums: the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Group of Eight (G8) Counter-Terrorism Working Group.

At the UNFCCC’s 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, Singaporean Foreign Minister Dr. Tan Kiat Chwen reaffirmed his country’s commitment to addressing the pressing challenge of climate change. The Minister emphasized the need for collective action and cooperation among nations to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development.

“We recognize that climate change is a pressing global issue requiring immediate attention and cooperation from all nations,” Dr. Tan stated during a press conference on December 9, 2023. “Singapore will continue to work closely with our regional partners and the international community to share best practices, accelerate innovation, and drive progress toward a low-carbon future.”

In parallel, Singaporean officials also participated in the G8 Counter-Terrorism Working Group’s meeting, held from December 7-8, 2023, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The group discussed key counter-terrorism issues, including terrorism financing, cybercrime, and the smuggling of illicit goods.

The Minister of National Defence, Dr. Ng Eng Hen, led a Singaporean delegation to the meeting, which aimed to enhance regional cooperation on counter-terrorism efforts. “Singapore’s participation in this working group is part of our broader commitment to regional security and stability,” Dr. Ng stated during the meeting.

Through these engagements, Singapore solidifies its position as a responsible and proactive player in the international community, reinforcing its regional and global partnerships.
