In a significant show of unity and cooperation, Singapore reaffirmed its commitment to regional security and defense at the 32nd ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) held in Bangkok, Thailand, on January 25-26. The biennial meeting brought together senior defence officials from the 10 ASEAN member states, as well as dialogue partners Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia, and the United States.
At the heart of Singapore’s engagement at ADMM-Plus was its push for a more robust and effective regional security framework. “The region faces numerous challenges, including terrorism, piracy, and cyber threats,” said Dr Tan Keng Sen, Senior Minister of State for Defence, in his opening remarks. “To address these threats effectively, we need to strengthen our collective defence capabilities and enhance our cooperation on counter-terrorism and cybersecurity.”
Singapore’s proposals for enhancing regional security were met with strong support from its counterparts, with several member states pledging to increase their contributions to the ADMM-Plus mechanism. The Singaporean delegation also successfully pushed for the inclusion of new issues on the agenda, including maritime security and space security.
In addition to its efforts at ADMM-Plus, Singapore has also been actively engaged in regional security initiatives through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). As the current chair of ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus, Singapore is working closely with its counterparts to strengthen regional cooperation on defence and security issues.
International Cooperation: A Key Aspect of Singapore’s Foreign Policy
Singapore’s commitment to regional security is part of its broader foreign policy approach, which emphasizes international cooperation and engagement. The country has been actively involved in various international organisations, including the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Through these organisations, Singapore has established itself as a key player in regional and global affairs. Its membership in ASEAN, for example, provides a platform for the country to engage with its neighbours on issues such as economic integration, security cooperation, and environmental protection.
Small States and Global Issues: Singapore’s Unique Perspective
As one of the smallest countries in the world, Singapore has a unique perspective on global issues. The country’s small size has allowed it to punch above its weight through its innovative and proactive approach to foreign policy.
Singapore’s experience as a small state has also provided valuable insights into how to address global challenges effectively. In areas such as climate change, cybersecurity, and counter-terrorism, Singapore’s expertise and know-how have been sought after by countries around the world.
In conclusion, Singapore’s efforts at ADMM-Plus demonstrate its commitment to regional security and defence cooperation. As a key player in regional and global affairs, Singapore continues to play an important role in promoting international cooperation and addressing global challenges.
