Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met with the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz, on June 17, 2025, during the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. The meeting marked the first time the two leaders had met since Chancellor Merz took office in May 2025.
The Prime Minister extended his congratulations to Chancellor Merz on his victory in the elections and his assumption of office, as well as expressed deep appreciation for the German Government's condolences over the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad last week. The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, green and sustainable development partnership, green energy, technology, innovation, education, and mobility.
The India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which is set to mark its 25th anniversary, was a focal point of the meeting. Both sides agreed to deepen and diversify their cooperation in this area. The Prime Minister thanked Chancellor Merz for Germany's strong expression of solidarity with and support to India's actions in the fight against terrorism.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments. The Prime Minister conveyed his intention to welcome Chancellor Merz to India at a mutually convenient time, paving the way for future meetings between the two nations.
The meeting was a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between India and Germany, highlighting their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development globally.
