India and Pakistan Conduct Prisoner Exchange Amid Diplomatic Dialogue

India and Pakistan have exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen detained in each other’s custody, a routine practice under the bilateral Agreement on Consular Access signed in 2008. This diplomatic gesture, conducted through official channels in New Delhi and Islamabad, underscores the ongoing humanitarian efforts between the two nations.

India shared the names of 381 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen believed to be of Pakistani origin, while Pakistan reciprocated with details of 49 civilian prisoners and 217 fishermen believed to be Indian. The process aims to ensure transparency and facilitate the timely release and repatriation of detainees who have completed their sentences.

India has called for the immediate release of 183 Indian nationals, including fishermen and civilian detainees, who have completed their sentences. Additionally, consular access has been requested for 18 individuals still awaiting confirmation of their nationality. Pakistan has been urged to verify the citizenship of 76 detained persons in India’s custody, enabling their repatriation.

Since 2014, continued diplomatic efforts have resulted in the repatriation of over 2,600 Indian fishermen and 71 civilian prisoners from Pakistan. The ongoing exchange reflects a shared commitment to humanitarian cooperation and the resolution of outstanding issues through dialogue.
