Japan-Cambodia Ties Deepen with Bilateral Cooperation

In a significant development in Cambodia’s diplomatic landscape, Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn welcomed a courtesy call by Japanese Special Advisor NAGASHIMA Akihisa on July 1, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The meeting marked a strong commitment to deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.

The two leaders discussed wide-ranging issues of common interests and concerns, with Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn praising Japan’s crucial support in Cambodia’s peace process and socio-economic development. Both sides agreed that the recent visit of Samdech Thipadei HUN Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, to Japan represented a historic milestone in elevating the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Cambodia and Japan.

The Joint Statement and Economic Co-Creation Package adopted during the visit set the tone for future cooperation, with Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn appreciating Japan’s continued support in economic development, particularly in trade and investment, education, and tourism. He also acknowledged Japan’s commitment to encouraging more investors to Cambodia.

Defence cooperation was another key area of focus, with both sides highly appreciative of growing collaboration in various fields, including human resource trainings for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and joint disaster response and mine clearance exercises. Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn also acknowledged Japan’s consideration of Official Security Assistance for Cambodia.

On the contentious border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving all disputes through peaceful means, emphasizing the country’s intention to bring the four specified hotspots to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He also expressed concern over the Thai Army’s unilateral closures of border crossings.

Japanese Special Advisor NAGASHIMA Akihisa expressed deep concern for the situation, highlighting the severe impact on cross-border trade and the need to reopen border crossings. Both leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interests and concerns.

The bilateral meeting underscores Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Japan, a key player in the region. The partnership is expected to continue yielding benefits for both countries, particularly in areas such as economic development, defence cooperation, and regional stability.
