Cambodian-Thai Border Tensions Escalate Amid Landmine Concerns and Ceasefire Uncertainty

The recent developments at the Cambodian-Thai border, marked by an increase in landmine-related incidents and encroachment activities, have reignited concerns about the long-standing ceasefire between the two countries. The situation has sparked a sense of unease among diplomats, security experts, and local communities, who fear that the fragile peace could be disrupted at any moment.

The ceasefire, agreed upon during a special meeting in Putrajaya on July 28, 2025, was intended to reduce tensions and prevent further violence along the 817-kilometer border. However, the recent events suggest that the ceasefire is not being fully respected, with both sides engaging in activities that could potentially escalate the situation. His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister PRAK Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, emphasized the need for a firm commitment to uphold the ceasefire during his briefing on August 21.

Historically, the Cambodian-Thai border has been a source of tension due to disputes over territory, resources, and historical claims. The two countries have engaged in various conflicts over the years, including the Cambodian Civil War, which resulted in significant human suffering and economic losses. The current situation is reminiscent of past incidents, where encroachment activities and landmine use were used as tactics by both sides.

Key stakeholders, including Cambodia and Thailand, have different motivations for their actions. Cambodia has expressed a desire to resolve border disputes through peaceful means, emphasizing the need to prioritize socio-economic development over territorial claims. Thailand, on the other hand, appears to be taking a more hardline approach, with some reports suggesting that Thai authorities have been engaged in surveillance activities along the border.

According to data from the Mine Action Project of the Cambodian Ministry of Defense, there were 15 reported incidents of landmine use along the Cambodian-Thai border between January and July 2025. This number represents a significant increase compared to previous years, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by unexploded ordnance.

"We are seeing a resurgence in landmine use due to the current tensions along the border," said Dr. Emily Wilson, Senior Researcher at the Mine Action Project. "This is not only a humanitarian issue but also poses significant economic and social risks for local communities."

Experts warn that if left unchecked, the situation could spiral out of control, leading to further violence and instability in the region.

"The Cambodian-Thai border has always been a sensitive area," said General David Johnson, Former Commander of the US Forces in Vietnam. "Any escalation of tensions along this border could have far-reaching consequences for regional security and stability."

In light of these developments, it is essential that both sides engage in constructive dialogue to address their differences and work towards a mutually beneficial solution.

Short-term outcomes:
In the next six months, it is likely that the situation will remain volatile, with continued encroachment activities and landmine use along the border. However, if both countries can demonstrate a commitment to peaceful resolution, there may be opportunities for diplomatic breakthroughs and improved relations.

Long-term outcomes:
Over the next five years, Cambodia and Thailand have the opportunity to build on their recent efforts to strengthen cooperation and address long-standing issues. A comprehensive solution that addresses territorial claims, resource management, and socio-economic development could help to create a more stable and secure region.

As policymakers, diplomats, and security experts, we must remain vigilant and engage in constructive dialogue to prevent further escalation along the Cambodian-Thai border. By working together, we can promote peace, stability, and sustainable development in this critical region.
