Cambodia Strengthen Ties with Indonesia Amidst ASEAN Cooperation

In a statement released on 05 Jan 2024, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sok Chenda Sophea, emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations during a courtesy call with Indonesian Ambassador Santo Darmosumarto.

The meeting highlighted the continued growth of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Indonesia, built on fruitful results from previous high-level meetings, including a notable encounter between Prime Minister Hun Manet and Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the 43rd ASEAN and Related Summits in Jakarta last year. Ambassador Sophea congratulated Darmosumarto on Indonesia’s successful chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023.

Both sides acknowledged the significance of expanding cooperation in various areas, including politics, security and defense, trade and investment, education, sports, culture, tourism, and people-to-people ties. To this end, they exchanged views on preparations for the Fifth Meeting of the Cambodia-Indonesia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation, set to be hosted by Cambodia at a mutually convenient time.

Furthermore, Darmosumarto expressed interest in exploring potential investment opportunities in Cambodia’s agro-industries, particularly in processing, warehousing, and rice milling for export to Indonesia. In response, Ambassador Sophea urged Indonesian businesspeople to explore these possibilities, emphasizing the country’s commitment to fostering economic cooperation.

The visit underscores Cambodia’s dedication to strengthening regional relationships through ASEAN cooperation, while maintaining open channels of communication with key partners such as Indonesia. This development reflects the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s efforts to promote diplomatic relations and foster a more collaborative environment for mutual benefit.

In conclusion, the successful meeting between Ambassador Darmosumarto and Sok Chenda Sophea highlights Cambodia’s commitment to expanding its ties with Indonesia, while deepening regional cooperation through ASEAN. This strategic partnership has far-reaching implications for trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
