In a statement released on 08 Dec 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia announced its participation in the Eighth Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Beijing. Representatives from China, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, India, and Singapore attended the meeting, with His Excellency SOK Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, participating alongside His Excellency Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, and His Excellency U Than Swe, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
During the meeting, the ministers discussed the steady progress made in implementing the MLC framework over the past seven years. They commended the effective implementation of the Five-Year Plan of Action (2018-2022) and highlighted the significant contributions of the MLC Special Fund to socio-economic development and enhanced well-being in the sub-region.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made under the MLC framework, particularly the success of 89 projects worth over $100 million in Cambodia. He emphasized the need for stable prices in agriculture and enhanced food security, calling for increased people-to-people ties, especially in culture, education, health, science, innovation, and tourism.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister SOK Chenda Sophea held productive talks with His Excellency Wang Yi, who reiterated China’s firm commitment to supporting socio-economic development in Cambodia. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for China’s continued assistance in key infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Deputy Prime Minister SOK Chenda Sophea also met with His Excellency U Than Swe, who expressed deep appreciation for Cambodia’s efforts in addressing the political crisis in Myanmar. Both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral ties for mutual benefit.
