Cambodia and Turkey Strengthen Diplomatic Ties through Bilateral Consultations

In a significant development, Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced the successful conclusion of the Third Session of Bilateral Consultations between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Republic of Turkiye, held in Ankara on March 19-20, 2024.

During his visit to Turkey, His Excellency Dr. Chem Widhya, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, met with His Excellency Mr. Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkiye, to discuss ways to further strengthen existing close ties and manifold cooperation between the two countries.

The discussions focused on trade and economic exchanges, as both sides celebrate this year’s 65th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations dating back to November 7, 1959. The talks also covered the exchange of high-level visits, including a planned official visit by His Excellency SOK Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, to Turkey.

Key areas of cooperation between Cambodia and Turkey include human capacity development, technology for development, trade, tourism, and agricultural cooperation. The two countries also exchanged views on regional, international, and multilateral affairs of common interest.

His Excellency Dr. Chem Widhya provided a comprehensive briefing on Cambodia’s current political and economic situations, highlighting the success of recent elections, the Six Priorities Policy Programme, and the Pentagonal Strategy-Phase I of the new Royal Government of Cambodia. He also expressed deep appreciation for Turkey’s continued support for human capacity development in Cambodia.

The co-chairs concluded the consultations by expressing their deep satisfaction with the fruitful outcomes. Following the session, His Excellency Ambassador Burak Akgapar hosted a working dinner in honour of the Cambodian delegation where both sides exchanged views on regional, international, and multilateral affairs of common interest.

The successful conclusion of these bilateral consultations highlights the importance of Cambodia’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen its relationships with key partners in the region.
